The clutch is the pedal on the extreme left and is to be operated by your left foot only. A combination of acceleration and releasing your clutch pedal slowly at the 'biting point' will result in a smooth start. This start off can also be co-coordinated with the handbrake (hill start). You should never hold your biting point for too long as it may cause a burning smell that could eventually lead to a replacement clutch.

Coasting or travelling on the clutch is another way to misuse the clutch pedal (i.e. pressing your clutch down too soon before stopping). The clutch should always be released smoothly in order for a smooth start off and smooth gear changes.

When the clutch is pressed down it disconnects the engine from the gearbox allowing the driver to change up or down the gears. When you raise the clutch you are reconnecting the engine to the gearbox allowing the car to move off. You should keep your left foot on the floor to the left of the clutch and only use that foot when you are engaging or disengaging the clutch.
