The latest Consumer Intelligence report from Empathy Research shows that over 30% of Irish consumers have used the post-pay system after travelling on the M50.
45% of respondents to the survey said the post-pay format worked well, however almost 40% said that they would still prefer a toll-booth option, with 17% saying that post-pay was not a good system.
Recent newspaper reports have suggested that the National Roads Authority (NRA), which administers the M50, had racked up a possible windfall of €100m in fines relating to the non-payment of toll charges.
As it stands, drivers who pass under the 'virtual' barrier have until 8pm the next day to pay the €3 toll at Payzone outlets, failure to pay by the cut-off results in an additional €3 charge.
This amount rises to €46.50 in total if the initial charge is not paid within 14 days.
