STOPPING DISTANCE

You should always drive so that you can stop safely in the distance you can see to be clear. You should:

  • judge a safe stopping distance from the traffic in front
  • avoid the need to brake sharply if the vehicle in front slows down or stops
  • keep a good distance from the traffic queues in front

Keep a close watch for:

  • brake lights ahead
  • direction indicators
  • vehicles ahead braking without warning

You should avoid:

  • following too closely or ‘tailgating’
  • braking suddenly
  • swerving to avoid the vehicle in front which may be slowing down or stopping
