STOPPING DISTANCE
You should always drive so that you can stop safely in the distance you can see to be clear. You should:
- judge a safe stopping distance from the traffic in front
- avoid the need to brake sharply if the vehicle in front slows down or stops
- keep a good distance from the traffic queues in front
Keep a close watch for:
- brake lights ahead
- direction indicators
- vehicles ahead braking without warning
You should avoid:
- following too closely or ‘tailgating’
- braking suddenly
- swerving to avoid the vehicle in front which may be slowing down or stopping
